I blogged everyday of my semester, you can check the archives. I also feel like we revised our speech enough and Brie did a lot better job at delivery. We were also the only group to finish anywhere near the 3 minute cutoff. I think that we definitely moved from a B to an A on that performance and revision. Anyway, Dave, you are going to be fine. I know that moving is exciting, but scary at the same time. Do not worry, you will be all right. There is a reason for everything and New York will treat you well. Hell, there are like 6 million single women. You have got to blog any good or funny stories. Anyways, talk to you soon and have a good summer.

Given your experiences this semester, what advice would you give to someone who wanted to produce a policy (deliberative) speech for presentation before a live audience? You may draw from Silva Rhetoricae, as well as from other sources on the web, and from class notes, but your answer should come mostly from your personal experience co-producing your group's speech this semester. Your post should include four links, including at least one to a classmate's answer to this question.

Well there are numerous pieces of advice that I could give someone who wanted to produce a policy or deliberative speech. I feel like I have been through the planning, the writing, the revising, and the performing. The first thing that I would say to someone is that it takes a lot longer than you think. You need to be patient with the whole process. The first time I went in to see Dave to have him check my speech, he probably cut at least half of the three page single-spaced speech. I was devastated because I put so much effort into this speech and I wanted it to be all right. This is where I learned my first lesson. You must be patient with the procedure that this writing entails. You have to be able to face criticism. Dave at times would look at my speech and shake his head and say, "No, No, No. This is all wrong." If I took this in a bad way, then I would never learn or grow. I took his advice the way that he meant it. He was only trying to get us to be better speechwriters. This all starts from the beginning though.
The first part of the process deals with recognizing that this type of speech writing has been going on for hundreds of years. These types of speeches have Greek origins and are written to persuade the audience. When studying ways of starting a speech, keeping the ideas of ethos, pathos, and logos in mind is a great idea. Ethos deals more with when the person is presenting, which we will get to in a little bit. Ethos is the concept of having a good character and good credentials. Basically, this means how well do you appeal to the audience. Your approach is going to be different with what audience you are confronting. Take for example, talking to a kindergarten class as opposed to a senior citizens group. Pathos is the idea of appealing to the audience's emotions. Right after 911, the audience was emotional, so you would need to adapt to that situation. Logos is perhaps the hardest one to abide. In the early parts of our speech, we tried to use hard concrete facts to get our point across. The concept of logos is to use persuasive language instead of persuasive facts. This allows for the other two figures to be useful. These three should be used with some judgment. You do not have to implement all three at one speech. You must determine your audience and what topic you are addressing and then go from there. At the same time, all three of these techniques play very well off each other.
After this has been studied and reviewed, one must look over actual techniques to use in the speech. Each sentence in the speech that you are about to write is important. One sentence could break the beautifully crafted speech. This would be a good time to review the techniques at Silva Rhetoricae. These do not seem helpful at first, but if you go to past speeches and try to pick out some of the techniques, then you will see how important they are and how important they could be to your speech.
After all of this is prepared, you must pick a topic. In class, we learned that you must pick a topic that you like. There is no point in discussing something that you have no interest in. If you do that, it will be reflected in your actual speech, which would not be appetizing. This to some people is the hardest part of the speech. Picking a topic can be daunting due to the fact that it seems like each topic has so many ideas and opinions attached to it. This is where one would be able to use the social judgment theory. In this website, you see a situation about teacher salary. At both ends of the spectrum, you have the extremes. As you work your way into the middle, the ideas become somewhat more neutral and at times more appealing to the general public. This is a great way of narrowing down your topic and taking an actual stand on what you issue really is. It is important to understand something though when doing this. As mentioned in class, the Pro-Life campaign has drastically changed. They used to show pictures of dead babies and dead fetuses to try and scare people over to the side of being completely pro-life. They realized that this did not work. They looked towards a social judgment theory. They started moving people's ideas one bit at a time. They won a few cases and made some positive strides. They started form the middle and changed their whole platform. This is a great example of why you should use the social judgment theory.
Next, you have your topic, so you are ready to write the speech. I have always said that starting a paper, speech, whatever it may be is the hardest part. I find it best to start the speech with a little joke or something to settle the crowd down. This is god because it relaxes the audience and gets them more acquainted to you. If you go in and just start off with what you want to say, then people are going to look at you in a more robotic way rather than a fellow human being, someone they can sympathize with. Take for example Mardea's speech does a great job of starting out with a little joke or something to cool the crow down. In addition, being from Texas, she uses some of the local slang and drawl when she speaks which is a great idea. She says, "First of all, I would like to thank ya'll for hosting this dinner tonight. I am honored to be here tonight, back in Texas. Why ya'll must be crazy to want to listen to little ole me but I'm thankful you do! Now before you get back to enjoying that steak, I do have a few things that I would like to say to all of you, and I would like to begin with some famous words: 'Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we’re free at last.' Martin Luther King spoke these monumental words on the steps of the Lincoln memorial, and approximately 40 years later, we still have to dream of freedom." This is great introduction. She talks about steak, which she knows is a key to everybody's heart down in Texas and then talks about Martin Luther King, someone everyone respects. After the introduction the rest of the writing has to be, in the words of Dave, homey. You have to use logos. You can't just spit out facts about the issue, you need to make people feel warm inside and get those old-fashioned American goose bumps about your issue. You need to use real life examples sort of like Kristen's Speech so you can draw the attention and the emotion of the crowd.
After you have done all that, revising it and cutting it down is the next step. This usually requires several times of rewriting and revising, but it will get there eventually. like I said earlier, you have to be patient. Great speeches don't come in a night. No one wants, especially in our class, to listen to a twelve-minute speech. If you go up there and say what you want to say with all of the techniques previously stated, then it will be successful. you just have to remember to not let it drag on. Do not repeat previous thoughts and ideas. This allows for people's attention spans to run wild. Keeping it short and concise is the way to go.
Finally, the delivery is very important. I feel like we did good preparation in our class with McGuffey's Reader in which we studied intonation and how to pronounce words and sentences. These techniques make you more confident and more appealing to the audience. This is extremely important. you could have a decent speech, but if you perform well up there, then it could make all the difference. the annoying thing about this whole thing is that you could work for months on a speech and if you go up there and do not implement any of the techniques, then your speech will be a waste. Remember to keep eye contact with the audience and in the case of Brie, you should smile the whole time. That is pretty much all that I have. Remember that it is not going to be perfect the first time. this is a technique or a craft that can be critiqued every single time, so keep that in mind. thanks a lot for a great semester Dave, and I hope that this helps out anyone who wants to write a speech like us.

yo gilbie, if I get a B+ on this speech but I have blogged everyday and not missed over 4 classes, am I still going to get a B+. It is a really cool event and I think that it could be really successful. The reason that i am saying this is because I really like the Counting Crows and I think that we could get them here and it would rock out with the cock out. Here is one of the songs that i reallly really like. I don't know. Quick announcement, the Roost is opened tonight at 9 and has one dollar drafts. It sounds like fun and two bands are going to play.

Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics

Well I woke up in mid afternoon cause that's when it all hurts the most
I dream I never know anyone at the party and I'm always the host
If dreams are like movies then memories are films about ghosts
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast
Well I am an idiot walking a tightrope of fortune and fame
I am an acrobat swinging trapezes through circles of flame
If you've never stared off into the distance then your life is a shame
And though I'll never forget your face sometimes I can't remember my name

Hey, Mrs. Potter, don't cry
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I know why
But, hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to me
Well there's a piece of Maria in every song that I sing
And the price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings
And there is always one last light to turn out and one last bell to ring
And the last one out of the circus has to lock up everything
Or the elephants will get out and forget to remember what you said
Oh and the ghosts of the tilt-o-whirl will linger inside of your head
Oh and the Ferris wheel junkies will spin there forever instead
When I see you, a blanket of stars covers me in my bed
Hey, Mrs. Potter, don't go, I said
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I don't know, but
Hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to me
Well all the blue light reflections that color my mind when I sleep
And the lovesick rejections that accompany the company I keep
All the razor perceptions that cut just a little too deep
Hey, I can bleed as well as anyone but I need someone to help me sleep
So I throw my hand into the air and it swims in the beams
It's just a brief interruption of the swirling dust sparkle jet stream
Well I know I don't know you and you're probably not what you seem
Aw, but I'd sure like to find out
So why don't you climb down off that movie screen
Hey, Mrs. Potter, don't turn
Hey, Mrs. Potter, I burn for you
Hey, Mrs. Potter, won't you talk to me
When the last king of Hollywood shatters his glass on the floor
And orders another
Well, I wonder what he did that for
That's when I know that I have to get out cause I have been there before
So I gave up my seat at the bar and I head for the door. I am a complete idiot and I missed one of my most important classes. Today in Oragnic Chemistry, I had to take the ACS, which is a national chemistry exam. This grade could replace our lowest quiz grade which is what i needed. The grades on this exam were not going to be very high, but she would curve them to help us out. Anyways, I just wanted to say one more thing, why is everyone's speech so gosh darn long. It is only supposed to be 3 minutes at the most. Everyone thinks that our speech was short, but I timed it and it was 2 minutes and 26 seconds. That seems rather good. I timed the first speech of today and it was five inutes and 4 seconds. That seems rather long. When we went into meeting with Gilbert, he told us it needed to be way shorter. But until then check out Caroline's Blog because she is living in Nantucket this summer and i am very jealous. Gilbie, i hope that Brie e-mailed you our speech that was revised. You said that without it being revised that it was a B, but after revision and with a little more content, I hope that we can get an A. The one concern that i have fr this class is that I am not going to get an A. I have blogged literally every single day for the entire semester. you can check my archives. Also, I have only missed like three times, two of the times it had to do with my heart, so i couldn't really help it. I know that gades aren't the most important things in the world, but when you are pre-med like yself, they really are. Every grade helps. And when you put in an A effort for a class, you want to actually recieve the A. Well hopefully Gilbie you can get our speech back to us bu tomorrow for when we present. Until then check out Hollywood's Blog because I have yet to link to hers. She is awesome girl. You guys should get to know her. her mom is really nice too. I have had an overwheling amount of people show concern and that makes me feel better. I got an e-mail the other day from one of the girls that i hang out with and it was so nice and caring. I was taken back. A lot of times in a college atmosphere, you forget to be nice and you forget to have common curtosy. It is almost like you are always looking out fr yourself. Well Sam didn't and I look at her in a different light now. I had to get my heartbeat restarted and it was quite the scary experience. i went home yesterday to St. Louis to get it checked out, but won't really know much for a while. the only real option that i was told was to perform an invasive procedure where they would puncture all of my veins and then stick a cathader into my heart anmd eliminate the elctrical problem. This would completely suck, but at the same time, i just want it over with. Later. I will keep this updated.

So I am waiting to here back from Gilbert because I want to know what grade that I got on the speech as of right now. You know when you get that feeling that noone wants to be there and that everyone is waiting for spring season, which is pointless, to be over? That is completely how I feel and I feel like that is how the rest of the team feels right now. Anyways, I don't want to keep using Blogger as my form of complaining. So I am trying to think of a good song and it comes to me. I thought of it because I thought of the Rams. Whenver the Rams score a touchdown this is the song that they play. The entire place goes absolutely nuts. Also, when I was a senior in high school, on Friday after the bell, we would play this song as loud as possibel in the halls and dance. P.S. SLUH, my high school, is the best high school in the land, and all of you knwo it. The only annoying thing is that my teacher asked me a question that was so obscure it was rediculous. She was like why did they use diazomethane instead of calcium bicarbonate? I was like,"I don't fucking know." Anyways here is my song for the day. I find it to be rather relavent, especially with the situation that our country is in overseas. It is kind of depressing, but it comes from my favorite album of all time from my favorite guy: Bob Dylan, in the world. The funny thing is though that I am still wearing the headphones despite the fact that I am not listening to any music. Well this next song comes from one of my favorite former bands, Uncle Tupelo. They are from St. Louis, actually Belleville, a small town outside of St. Louis in Illinois. They are the former band of both Sunvolt and Wilco. They have a serious country twang to them, but they aren't country if that makes any sense. Well anyways, one of my favorite Cd's of theirs is Still Feel Gone. This song is from that album, so enjoy and check them out.

Uncle Tupelo - Still Be Around Lyrics

I don't see you through the windshield
I don't see you in faces looking back at mealcohol doesn't have
much that matters to saycan't imagine where you and time to kill
will stay

when the bible is a bottle
and the hardwood floor is home
when morning comes twice a day or not at allif I break in two will
you put me back together
when this puzzle's figured out will you still be around
to say you've just been there
walking the line upside down

walked and breathed many a cancerous mile
where the bat of an eye is too slow to beat the coffin
they won't tell it on the TV
they can't say it on the radio
they pay to move it off the shelf and into our mindsuntil you can't
tell the truth
when it's right in front of your eyes

when the bible is a bottle
and the hardwood floor is home
when morning comes twice a day or not at all
if I break in two will you put me back together
when this puzzle's figured out will you still be around
to say you've just been there
walking the line upside down

Ok, so I hope that everyone liked the song that I put on the post the other day and I also hope that some people checked it out. Before I do my next song, I want to say that I went back and changed a few things in my speech because Kristen and her group (Scott and Kai) had their meeting today with Gilbert. They told me that he kind of tore it apart and I didn't want to go in on Friday and have him do the same thing, so I went back and changed it in accordance to some of the changes that they had to make. Also, I went back in and filled in my rhetorical figures. Anyways, back to the important stuff. This next song is a lot different than the rest. It isn't acoustic, nor prolific lyrics, it is just really fun to listen to. We all just went down to Jamaica last week and we listened to a lot of Beach Boys, and we especially listened to this song cause of the word Jamaica was always present. Anyways, I know that most of you have heard this but you should check it out. A really quick story. The first time that I heard this song was in Cocktail the movie, which totally kicks ass. That was the movie that I was forbidden to watch when I was younger. This might be the reason for me liking it so much now. Anyways, talk to you soon.

Kokomo by* Beach Boys (google pics) (remove all links)

Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Jamaica
Off the Florida Keys
There's a place called Kokomo
That's where you wanna go to get away from it all
Bodies in the sand
Tropical drink melting in your hand
We'll be falling in love
To the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Ooo I wanna take you down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
To Martinique, that Monserrat mystique
We'll put out to sea
And we'll perfect our chemistry
By and by we'll defy a little bit of gravity
Afternoon delight
Cocktails and moonlit nights
That dreamy look in your eye
Give me a tropical contact high
Way down in Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Ooo I wanna take you down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
Port Au Prince I wanna catch a glimpse
Everybody knows
A little place like Kokomo
Now if you wanna go
And get away from it all
Go down to Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Ooo I wanna take you down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Ooo I wanna take you down to Kokomo

so today i am going to share with everyone how obsessed I am with irish music. This obsession started a while ago, but it was kicked into high gear when i went to Ireland for three weeks this summer. I can not tell you how much of ablast it was. It is rather stereotypical also. The pubs are smoky, the Guiness is flowing, and the fiddles are filling the room with sweet music. People love to jig or Irish dance when they here music and even if you have absolutely no idea what you are doing, it is fun to join in. One of my favorite bands is Gaelic Storm. They came to Easton in the fall and put on a concert at Frado, that irish pub. they are so fun to see, cause all they do is the drinking music, pump up song. Anyways, here is one of my favorite songs by them with words. You should buy their CD's at CDNOW.com

Before The Night Is Over

by Gaelic Storm
Album	:
Some take their hope, and hide it away
It burns in the darkness, like gold in a grave
There's a spark inside, that can't be concealed
No hurt is so secret that it won't be healed

Chrous:
Before the night is over
Make your heart an open door
Then all we hold inside us
Won't divide us any more
Before the night is over
And the time we have is done
Before our courage fades away
Let our hearts be bound as one

I've lost my way, when nothing is clear
I've been afraid to love, then I hurt what I fear
I can face the night, find strength in your eyes
not afraid to fall, not afraid to rise

Chorus

Chorus repeat and fade

Ok, so I have been rather lazy this past couple of days and also very preoccupied with writing my speech for the presentation. Anyways ack to the amazing songs that i have been blogging about last week. I am trying to think of a good song, so here it is. There is a singer who is originally from Ireland. This song is rather soothing and puts me to sleep everynight. Anways, here it is and everyone should downlad this song and put it on one of those girly, "goodnight mixes". Until then check out
Gaelic Storm for some kick ass Irish music for all of you out there.

Twenty-third Street

This moonlight in New York
will not go away
I sit in this hotel
and tonight I'm just too drunk to pray
She said that she'd always love me
but that she might not always stay

(Refrain:)
Have a seat
Have a seat
And we can look at the world through this window
on 23rd Street

I came a long way to see her one more time
There was a subway to take me uptown
There was an address she gave me last Christmas
where she said she could always be found
I listened as she said she loved me
I'll always remember that sound

(Refrain)

If you look closely down to the sidewalk
you can see yourself as a ghost
We would walk 'round the block with no reason to talk
Back then we were younger than most
It's a love that you never will see
Hey, buddy, I don't mean to boast

(Refrain)

Well, there's some folks bring love to a hotel
and some just bring their own quiet end
My story is not one hard to tell
and I just want to tell it again
She said that she'd always love me
All I need is to find her again

(Refrain)

yo this next song is really cool. I liked it a lot even before it was used in American Wedding. Van Moorison is very special to me, being Irish and all. He is one of my favorite song writers. I think that it is kind of weird, but at the same time kind of cool that he doesn't play Brown Eyed Girl or any of his huge hits at concerts. He wants people to like his music, not his big hits. Anyways here is the song:

Into The Mystic

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don’t have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when thst fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don’t have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float into the mystic
Come on girl...

Until then check out Meghan's Blog

so I really liked my blog yesterday and I think that I am going to keep doing this. I want to put the lyrics to songs that i like a lot, even if some of them are pretty stereotypical songs. This next song has really good lyrics, but I just really like the guitar entrance to this song. I am a sucker for acoustic songs, so this song will come as no surprise. The Die Straits have so many good songs. I didn't really start to get into them until Senior year when i would go to the public library, rent their CD's, and then burn them. I know that some people are really against it, but the library had some really random live Dire Straits CD's. I don't know if that is really how you are supposed to spell it. But instead I want to talk about a song by the greatest performer/songwriter/influence of all time: Bob Dylan. I am going to put the lyrics to my favorite Dylan song on this blog because I think that they are absolutely amazing. I don't know what really to say except one of my favorite lines is when he says, "I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul". So here are the lyrics and I would really like some feedback if people think that this is his best work: The Freewheelin Bob Dylan.

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright
~Bob Dylan

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right
It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right
I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

So until then check out Dean's Blog

This is my blog with all of my rhetorical figures that I have done over the semster:

hypozeugma
Placing last, in a construction containing several words or phrases of equal value, the word or words on which all of them depend

Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens: America...

hypozeuxis
Opposite of zeugma. I know that everyone doesn't quite know what I am discussing, but I am looking for more fluid comments and grammatical corrctions. So here it is and until then chekc out Fatima's Blog

The Woman in the Body: A Cultural Analysis of Reproduction

I have taken science courses my entire life and I continue to take them even in college and there are things that I have read in these two chapters, especially the third chapter, that blow my mind and open me to some new insights. Also, before I get going another thing that boggled my mind is the idea of race as a biological determinant, an idea that we talked about and discussed in great length and detail in class, plays a role in gender reproduction issues. It amazes me that a concept like that can recycle itself into numerous other ideas such as reproduction.
In chapter two, I felt like there were too many assumptions that were a little too nit-picky. I have complete respect for this author, especially after knowing how she obtained all of her evidence, but some of the feminists that she quoted looked into things a little too much. I took intense courses of English in high school and it seemed at times that we overanalyzed and we over critiqued novels much like some of the ladies of chapter two. The idea that I am drawing upon is when Martin writes, “[women] are viewed less as individuals than as the ‘raw material’ from which the ‘product’ is extracted. In these circumstances, the physician, rather than the mother comes to be seen as having produced the baby. The child is the product which has to be produced according to exact specifications… mothers are ignorant of how to rear children and have to be instructed by experts. These experts, of course, are male.” I know that this is a rather lengthy quote but I feel like it has much significance. I completely understand what she is saying. Some of the terminology that we use when describing pregnancy are things usually associated with factories or cooking goods, ex. Baking bread in the oven. I can see where one is coming from when they say that this gives not only a negative impression on childbirth but devalues the amazing importance of it. The other side to this is that physicians did do a lot of work to deliver the baby. Often it is the mother of the child who gives such praises to the doctor and not just outside observers. This is not an attempt to say that the mother did not do any work, but more or less that there were numerous people that were involved in the creation of the baby. When relatives go to the hospital they sometimes give flowers, not for the baby’s sake but to cheer the mother up and congratulate her. I might not be the majority of people’s thoughts but I give the mother a ton of congratulations on having a child because quite frankly I could never take that kind of pain. Another thing about this passage is that women usually either choose to see “professionals” or they have not had the experience of raising a baby and they need pointers. It is a very different work community than when Martin originally wrote the book. A lot more women are working and there are probably the same amount of female family planners as male, if not more.
In chapter three, my skepticism about feminist radical thoughts started to get swayed when she brought up all of the misconceptions that people use to actually believe. The main thing that blew my mind was the notion of body heat. She quoted, “women were of a colder and less active disposition than men, so that while men could sweat in order to remove the impurities from their blood, the colder dispositions of women did not allow them to be purified in that way. Females menstruated to rid their bodies of impurities.” This concept struck me as interesting because it made me think of past class discussions. We said that colonialism was one of the catalysts for racial stereotypes that still exist today because the environment of the subject (Africans) was disturbed and the human interactions were under specific conditions and their was an apparent power difference. This last quote made me think of the stereotypes that we hold on women today. When I think of menstruation, I get kind of woozy due to the fact that I have had social ideas rooted in me that blood loss is a bad thing. This could have been stemmed from a while ago, just like colonialism did with the idea of biology being a racial determinant. So the previous paragraph now doesn’t seem so ridiculous. Menstruation is a good thing for girls, in the biological sense. It is a sign that the body is performing normally except when pregnant. Abnormal menstruation can sometimes be a bad sign. So I shouldn’t feel sick to my stomach when I think about menstruation, but rejoice it. Social stereotypes are deeply rooted on females and a lot of the vocabulary and preconceived notions keep these stereotypes recycling.

so today I received word that i didn't get the internship that i applied to in New York City at NYU school of medicine. There were 900 applicants for 30 spots and I was in the top 100 so I didn't feel too bad. In any case, I called the school to see what had happened and what i could improve my resume on for next year. The only thing that they told me was that I was discarded because one of my teachers letters of reccommendation was never received. I almost flipped out. I mean what the fuck? This is rediculous. This is not an extra thing a teacher can do for a student, it is a part of their job. Now they an give you a poor recemmendation, but as long as they submit something. Anyway this internship was reallly sweet and now I missed out on it. It was at NYU, payed 3000 dollars, and gave you round trip transportation. That would have been awesome, but no I can't have it. Anyways, i didn't want to bitch out my teacher so I called my dad and I am presently about to write him a letter. Anyways, hope tat everyone had a good weekend, and I will blog to everyone tomorrow.

Hey everyone, I am going to put up another picture today because I was inspired by Liz's Picture on her blog today. It reminded me of what the beach was like and how excited I am to finally go there. I found a really good picture of the Caribbean the other day on the internet and I thought who better to share it with, my blog friends of course. Anyways, I think that it is final, I am pretty sure that my friend Robby and I are going tanning. My mom totally thought that it would be a good idea. I don't really like the idea of it, but I am only going to go for like 2 times. I couldn't agree more. I went to go see the movie. I feel like whatever religion you choose to associate yourself with or none at all, you should see this movie. It is really powerful and it sends a good humanitarian message of love and perseverance. Whatever you believe, I feel like we can all learn from great people throughout history: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, and Jesus. They all went through struggles and tribulations to get their message of love, acceptance, etc... out into the world. I bet if this movie was about one of these other people, there wouldn't be as much outrage, or pretty much none at all. I went to Catholic High School, so I had to read the entire Bible throughout my four years. That was a very very correct depiction of the Passion. The only thing that I can think of is that he was nailed to the cross by his wrists. His hands wouldn't have been able to support the rest of his body. That is so trivial though when you look at the broader spectrum. Well that is it for now, once again check out Alex's Blog for his really good commentary.

Hello all, I am going to put up another website today. I think that it is pretty cool. I am often asked if i could go one place in the world, where would it be? I know this answer right off the bat. My answer to everyone is Nepal. I want to climb, at least a little bit of it, Mount Everest. I think that it is one of the most amazing sites that one could ever see. I have always been obsessed with nature. the idea of seeing amazing forests, towering mountains, and amazing feats of Mother Nature has always astounded me. Reading about them is one thing but actually being there and breathing the same ar as Everest would be abolutely amazing. I am going to put up a picture, one of my favorites from this website, but until then check out Nate's Blog

So I completely forgot to write on Friday due to the fact that it was a really busy day and also because we had our meeting with Gilbert. Anyways a lot was accomplished on Friday in our meeting with Gilbert. We went in not really knowing what position that we were going to take. We are discussing the idea of dietary supplements, especially ephedra. We started off not knowing that there had been a law passed already that completely banned the usage and sale of ephedra, so we were stuck. After a lot of discussion we decided to stick to a more general idea of dietary supplements and the slowly but surely ban of them. We are going to try to get a law passed that has a warning label on them, a national ad campaign warning people about the side effects, and possibly an age limit on selling and buying a dietary supplement. That is about it, until now check out my Group Blog.

hello all. Last night was absolutely rediculous. I went with Denison University to see The Passion of the Christ, the new Mel Gibson flic. I mean to tell you it was absolutely the most gory movie that I have ever seen. The one word to describe the overall feel of the film would be intense. I am Catholic, so I might be a little biased, but I thought that this movie was absolutely amazing. It was so powerful. I am not a Bible preaching fundamentalist, so I understand people being hesitant about seeeing this movie. It is definately worth your time. You see Jesus be this God-mighty figure and at the same time you get to see his fears of actually being killed. Also because it is so realistic, you feel like you are taking on the same struggles. I mean to tell you the scourging at the pillar scene lasts for like 25 minutes and it is the bloodiest thing that I have ever seen, even more than Last of the Mohekans or Dances with Wolves. The bloodiest part was when they actually show them nailing his hands into the cross. It was difficult to watch. All in all though it was a spectacular movie that everyone should check out. By the way, did everyone know that the actor who played Jesus got struck by lightening during production? That is kind of weird. Here is the website for the movie if you want to check it out. The Passion of the Christ

yo everyone this is kyle banahan and today is the big election for class senator of 2006. I am kind of nervous even though a lot of people aren't running for the position. I know that this sounds kind of hockey and corney but I do have one thing that I would like to do is elected. I look at other schools, big and small, and see that they can use their student id cards in numerous places either on campus or off campus. At a large school such as Ohio State, you can use your buckey bucks anywhere around campus. At a small school like College of the Holy Cross, you can use your Crusader Cash for delivery and for restaurants in Worchester, Mass. This is a system that we need to adopt. It takes baby steps, such as the laundry and dryer machines being converted to card accessible. Next it carries over to the Bandersnatch, then the vending machines and hopefully in the end, Granville. Anyways, I find out tongiht if I won, and tomorrows blog should be pretty good. I will tell everyone about my amazing weekend at Mardi Gras in tomorrow's blogger, but today I want to share with everyone a website that my friend sent me. On New Year's Eve, my friends and I went to a rather elegant party for a girl who was the queen of her debutante. Her party was at St. Louis Country Club and needless to say we were all pretty fucked up. My friend took a picture from that night of one of my friends and turned it into a really funny image on the web. All you have to do is press play and his mouth moves. I am really happy that dean helped me put a picture up onto my blog. Anyways, this days blog is going to be about the whole situation going down in Colorado. There are a lot of sides to look at. The coach sounded like an absolute moron. By doing this the university will fire him thus coming out acting like they were the big people in the situation. By firing this guy, the University will say that they are taking a stand about sexual injustice, rape, and sexual issues in general. This is all great but in a few weeks when we snap back into normal life and this case is just an afterthought, the universities who allow for this to go on, will keep allowing it to happen. This is a frustrating feeling, because we are in a cyclic downward spiral that is going to hurt us as an American population. To save any face, the coach should have acted like he had no idea any of this was going on. He then should have said that he will put forth all of his efforts to try and find all of the guilty parties. Maybe a little tear for the cameras. Also if I were him, I would talk about how influential the girl kicker was for the team. Maybe boost her self-esteem a little so she won't press charges and so she could possibly drop out of the spotlight. The tear could be pushing it for the believability factor, but in the situation that he is in right now, it is all that hes got. I will return to that on Friday. Anyways, the reason is that I want to know how to put pictures onto my blogger. We may have already talked about it in class, so this could be a dumb question, but I don't know how to do it so if someone could post how to do it on their blogger then that would be great. Until then check out Dean's Blog for a really cool picture of Bob Marley, who is from Jamaica which is where I will be in 23 days for an entire week. The weird thing about georgetown is that thye all set up reservations to go to brunch. So i dragged my ass out of bed and went to Cafe Bonaparte. I basically payed about 15 dollars for a hotpocket and three dollars for a pint sized memosa. After that, I was still hungry, but I wanted to see all of the sites of Washington D.C., due to the fact that I had never been there. We walked from Georgetown to the capitol which is a hell of a long way. I saw the White House, the Capitol, the Smithsonian (more specifically the Muesum for Air and Space), the Vietnam Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, The Korean War Memorial, the Washington Monument, and Jefferson's Memorial. I basically did everything that you could do in a day at D.C. We ate at a place native to the area called Booeymongers, which had amazing food. I got a roast beef sandwhich with melted brie on top. It was delicious. We came home later and decorated the entire apartment in a Heaven theme, for the Heaven and Hell party that was going on later that night. We ate a quick dinner on V-Day at a place called the Tombs. They had a beer selection there of over 450 beers. I still stuck with the Budweiser though. Later that night beer and Jungle Juice were flowing and the party was amazing. There was also an ice luge which was pretty kick-ass. Anyways thats it for now, I will conclude my weekend on the next posting. Until then check out Scott's Blog.

So this weekend I went to Georgetown University to visit one of my best friends from highschool. The ride didn't take that long and only took like 6 hours. I got dropped off at the gates of Georgetown where my friends apartment was located. His apartment was amazing and it the area that this is in is so posh. He pays about 7,000 dollars a semester to live there. I met all of his roommates and then we went right to the bars. We went to a bar called Chadwick's, then to Old Glory, and then to Rhino's. I had to give the bouncer thirty bucks to let my one friend in cause he didn't have a fake ID. We went back to my friends place, pretty intoxicated and watched the Family Guy on DVD. The weird thing about Georgetown is that for late night munchies, we ordered big things of hummus and warm bread. That isn't your average Nick's Incredible Pizza, but it was still pretty good. Also at the place that delivered hummus they sold six packs of beer and delivered them. The hummus was pretty good but it came with bananas and grapes which were really good. Anyways, my next blogger will be about the rest of my weekend. I just read Kristen's Blog, and I am also under that same question. I know that I haven't been religious about linking to other people's blogs, but I basically have been doing a blog everyday since the first assignment. When I went to other peolple's blogs, they didn't have a very updated posting. I didn't want to write this because I wanted to get people in trouble or make myself look like a great student. I merely want to know if I have to do this every day? Anyone care to comment especially you Dr. Gilbert, that would be great.

So, I wanted to post my essay today that I have been using for all of my internships. If anyone comes across my Blog, tell me what you think: good or bad. Thanks a lot and by the way everyone should check out Dean's Blog it is pretty cool:Dean's Blog

Richard Kyle Banahan
Essay Form

When I was in high school, I would always tell everyone that I wanted to be a doctor. They would always then ask me why? I have no one in my family who is a doctor, in fact my mom is a Catholic grade school teacher and my dad is a St. Louis City Policeman, a very humble background, so that wasn't the reason. I went for about three years not knowing why I really wanted to be a doctor. Everyone that I knew had amazing reasons for what they wanted to do with themselves, so I was slowly starting to believe that I really had no cause, no purpose in life.
At my high school, you get off the entire month of January when you are a senior for service projects. Five of my closest friends and I went down to Belize to build houses. We went down there with a chaperone, who happed to be a doctor of internal medicine. Watching him go to all of these small villages and seeing the kind of effect that one man possesses overwhelmed me. Not only his healing power, but the way in which he handled all of these children, making them feel completely comfortable, because for many of them this was their first glimpse of a doctor. At times I remember seeing him just hold a little girl close to him because he had never experienced a hug. My words can only give you a small piece of what this trip was like for me. It changed me in more ways than one. It showed e that there was life outside of my suburban shell and that people in my own town need just as much help as these people in Belize.
So I finally had my reason for wanting to pursue a career in medicine, but now what kind of doctor? I switched a lot in what area of specialty, but I have concluded that I want to do patient care and research in oncology. I find cancer to be so terrible and yet so interesting at the same time. The one thing about cancer that really intrigues me is the fact that it has the power to be passed on from one family member to the next. I have done a research project on onco genes. The concentration of this project was the function of histones on DNA to see if there was any relationship with causing cancerous cells to be produced. Another area of research that I conducted with a biology teacher at Denison University, who couldn’t write a recommendation letter cause he is on sabbatical, was the formation of neuronal synapses. Most people are under the impression that synapses are little pools of “water” in which neurotransmitters float from the axon to the dendrite. The research that I did for about 3 weeks was to study how these synapses are formed. I focused mainly on their early development. I was amazed to find out how protein-rich and complex these structures really are. I feel like this project really inspired me to want to do research. When I first started off the project, I could barely understand what I was reading and it seemed rather pointless of a study. The more and more that I kept researching and reading though, I started to become fascinated by the network of axons, synapses, and dendrites in the human body. I could write a ten page paper on all of the entities that go into place to form the synapse.
While at Denison, I have taken a full year of General Chemistry, a full year of Organic Chemistry, a semester of Zoology, and a semester of Cell and Molecular Biology. I am now in my second semester of Organic Chemistry and I am taking a semester of Ecology and Evolution. I am pre-med, but I am majoring in French with a minor in either Biology or Chemistry. I really like the sciences and that is why I am applying for this program. I want to do the same thing that the doctor did in Belize. I want to work abroad and practice medicine for underprivileged children with a group called Medecins Sans Frontiers, or Doctors without Borders. This is why I am majoring in French.
I am Caucasian and feel like I need a summer to be submerged in a diverse situation. I am proud of who I am and I pride myself in not putting others down for skin color, religious preference, or sexual preference. I went to all boys Catholic high school, which at times can be very close-minded, but I feel like I broke out of that mold and have shaped myself into a pretty well-rounded guy. I am a varsity soccer player, a soon to be member of the pre-medical honorary, founder of a group that raises awareness about humanitarian crises around the world (inspired by Doctors without Borders), in the French club (le Café Francais), and a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Nothing in this world would make me happier than to get this internship in research. I think that it would benefit my character, my career, and benefit you guys in the future. I would hope that I would change the other people at this job just as much as they would change me.

I am going to write today about how much importance we put on Valentine's Day. I didn't even want to capitalize it because it isn'ta real holiday. It was obviously made up by the greeting card company. I know that that argument is said a lot but I truly do feel like everyday should be a form of Valentine's day. It doesn't have to be your significant other, but more or less to the ones that you love. You shoudl tell your friends how important they are to you and you should also do stuff for them everyday. That is really all that I have for today but my biggest tiff about the day is when people get engaged. That is the corniest thing in the world. Anyways here is a blog that discusses Valentine's Day. Kai's Blog

So I just went on nerve.com and I looked up some profiles of people who put personal ads out. The were interesting to say the least, but the weird thing about all of these ads was there was nothing really personal. All of the stuff that Gilbert read to us made it very personal, but the only thing tat was intriguing about ours was the titles. The one title that I saw was for a guy looking for a girl and his title was, "I m usually a good boy (NOT!!!)." That was kind of an interesting title. Instability and wanting a title to stick out are two things that come to mind. He seems like he really isn't that funny, mainly cause he used a NOT joke, but more or less always wants to be center of attention. It is really sad how much I am reading into a person by the title of his personal ad. Anyways that's all I have for now, hopefully I can go to a website that gets a little more descriptive.

So I am putting another website up today on my links. I was blown away by how awful these guys are, but enough of me talking, check it out for yourself.

So lately I have been very stressed due to the fact that I have to hand in all of these internship applications. I am applying to about fifteen of them and I honestly do not know if I will get a single one. The one that I really want is at NYU for the summer. It pays pretty nice and it gives you housing, which in New York City is awesome. The only thing that I am having trouble with is that a lot of the internships that I am applying for, are for minority students only, or preference is given. I don't know how I feel about this. I by no means come from a prosperous family. My dad is a policeman and my mom is a teacher. They have worked every day of their lives to send my sister and me to good schools, but they don't get any breaks because they are white. I feel like I am the same way. I have worked hard for everything that I have gotten. I feel like only the best applicants should get the internship. You could be a very wealthy Native American with ok grades and get the internship over a lower class white kid with better grades. I do not see how fair this really is. If you think other wise, or want to comment, please do.

I dont have that much to say in this blog, but I do have a joke that I think is kind of nerdy funny.
What do you call a blond with half a brain?

a genius

This next post is to raise awareness of the website that I just put up. I don't want to sit here and preach to everyone about how spoiled and naive we are, cause Lord knows that I fall into that same category also, but we at Denison need to take a step back form our sheltered lives and see what is going on in the world around us. I bet a lot of people didn't know that malnutrition is the largest killer in the entire world. I can barely make it through the day if I don't have lunch. This website highlights an organization that is a humanitarian group of doctors, volunteers, and social workers that go to third world countries and give free medical attention to anyone that needs it. This is what I want to do right outside of Medical School. I don't want to do it so people look at me and say, "Wow! What a good person," but I want to do it because I have had nearly everything that I have wanted in my life and I feel like this is my way of giving it back. My goal is for people to look at this website, and hopefully me someday, and think to themselves that they should get involved. There is a world outside of "the Hill" and it is an ugly one. People die at rates that you wouldn't be able to believe. Hopefully someday this will stop, but until then, we should try to do anything that we can.

Well I guess that this is the first post about myself. My name is Richard Kyle Banahan. I have gone by my middle name my entire life, Kyle, but I have many nicknames most of which involve changing my last name to something funnier such as: Banakazans, Shinanabans, etc... I think that you get my drift. My mom has always called me KB, which not until high school did I realize was a drug reference. I don't think that my mom knows about this though.
I have an older sister of 25 who is law school at Washington University od St. Louis, a dad who is a policeman in the city of St. Louis, and a mom who is a Catholic gradeschool teacher. I have a yellow lab, and both my sister and I went to all-boys or all-girls Catholic grade school and high school. I get made fun of a lot for having a rather Americana-esque family, but I like it.

What did the fish say when it ran into the wall?

Dam
